Stop the TAFE Rip Off
After three stopworks and a passionate campaign by AEU members, a deal has at last been reached in principle with employers and the State Government to give a substantial pay rise to TAFE teachers. The AEU TAFE and Adult Provision Council has approved the heads of agreement reached with the TAFE employers. Further negotiations are now required on the details of the agreement before it can be put to members for ratification. The proposed agreement will see a 6.5% upfront pay rise backdated to 1 October, a new T5 classfication and annual 3.25% pay rises, taking TAFE teachers to within $2,400 of school teachers at the top of the scale over the life of the agreement, compared to the current gap of almost $13,000. The proposal also includes action to address the high rates of casualisation. Read the bulletin announcing the proposed agreement.
The AEU launched its fight for a fair deal in TAFE in March 2007, lobbying the State Government for a single agreement for TAFE teachers across Victoria. Skills Minister Jacinta Allan was inundated with hundreds of campaign postcards from AEU TAFE members. Congratulations to TAFE members for your outstanding support, which has proved the key to success in the campaign to stop the TAFE rip off.
