Young Member Activist Program

Each term the AEU invites two members to participate in a Young Member Leadership program. This is an exciting initiative that gives young members an opportunity to experience and participate in AEU activities.

The Young Member Leadership Program runs for one week and the AEU will cover the replacement cost of the successful applicants. Successful applicants are encouraged to participate in AEU regional meetings for the remainder of the year.

It is necessary to advise your principal/employer that you are applying for this program. Your principal/employer must sign your application form. It is recommended that you inform your principal/employer as early as possible to arrange replacement staff.

For further information, email James Rankin or call him on (03) 9417 2822.

YMAP participants Alistair Pata, Apollo Parkways PS, Randall Evans, Narre Warren South P-12 and Michael Timewell, Kambrya College talk about their week at the AEU in May 2008:

"It would be no surprise to readers that the week leading up to ratification meetings was a very hectic and enlightening time to be around the AEU.

"Between visiting schools explaining the ins and outs of the new agreement and travelling to regional universities in Albury and Ballarat talking to pre-service teachers, our week at the AEU flew by.

"The time we spent around AEU HQ was jam packed with meetings, spending time with the Membership Services Unit and experiencing the day-to-day operations of our union.

"There were invaluable opportunities to talk to negotiators, local organisers, heads of the various AEU sectors such as TAFE and early childhood, and the AEU leadership team. Without exception, each and every person we spoke to was willing to share a wealth of experience and knowledge and answer any questions we may have had.

"We feel we gained a fantastic insight into how our union works for its members and an appreciation of how hard the AEU staff work -- and their passion for public education is evident in everything they do.

"The YMAP runs every term and is free to members with the union also covering school CRT costs. Anyone who feels they would like to know more about the AEU is encouraged to apply.

"Our thanks to James Rankin and the AEU leadership team for organising this program and supporting us throughout the week."
