International Workers' Memorial Day
International Workers" Memorial Day is 28 April every year - a global union campaign day to remember the dead and to fight for safer, healthier, better work.
Good occupational health for all workers is the key 2008 global priority. As such, the Zero Occupational Cancer Campaign will be officially launched on this day. The traditional memorial event will be held at "The Rock" in Carlton, with proceedings commencing after 10.20am and ending with one minute's silence at 11.00am.
International Workers' Memorial Day marks the day when workers all over the world stop for a minute to mourn for those who have died as a result of work, but also to give notice that we are not going to give up the fight.
What can you do on Workers' Memorial Day?
Participate in the Workers' Memorial Day event by observing one minute's silence at 11am in your workplace.
Elect health and safety representatives for your workplace if you don't have them: get the materials for electing more OHS Reps, under the new laws that came into effect 1 July, 2005.
Have a meeting of OHS Reps and union delegates to discuss health and safety issues at your workplace.
Ask your employer to fix health and safety problems at your workplace - employers have a legal duty to provide a safe and healthy workplace; if your employer will not fix health and safety problems, contact your union.
